How Swiss Health Insurance Works

Switzerland has a two-pillar health insurance system regulated by federal law:

  • Basic insurance (KVG/LAMal) — mandatory for all residents. Every insurer offers exactly the same benefits by law. Only the premium differs. You can switch insurers once a year by November 30.
  • Supplementary insurance (VVG/LCA) — optional. Covers private hospital room, dental, alternative medicine, worldwide coverage, etc. Insurers can reject you or impose health-based limits.

Since basic-insurance benefits are identical by law, the only reason to pay more than necessary is not having compared. Our wizard handles the comparison and the cancellation paperwork in one workflow.

Common Questions from Expats

I just arrived in Switzerland — what should I do?+
You have 3 months from arrival to register for KVG basic insurance. The insurance backdates to your arrival date, so there is no coverage gap. Pick any provider — every basic-insurance offering is legally identical, only the price differs.
Can I use my private insurance from my home country?+
No. All Swiss residents (including expats and cross-border workers in many cases) must have Swiss KVG basic insurance. You can keep additional coverage from abroad if you wish, but it does not replace KVG.
What's the cheapest health insurance in Switzerland?+
It depends on your canton, age, deductible (CHF 300 to 2,500), and chosen model (standard / family doctor / HMO / telemedicine). Use our wizard for your exact ZIP code — we calculate the cheapest provider for your situation in 5 minutes.
Do I need an English-speaking insurer?+
Most major Swiss insurers (Helsana, CSS, Swica, Sanitas) offer English customer service in international hubs like Zurich, Geneva, and Basel. The contract itself is typically in German, French, or Italian.
How long does the switch process take?+
Our wizard takes 5 minutes. Cancellation of the old insurer must reach them by November 30 via registered mail. The new contract starts January 1. We handle both steps automatically.
